I'm planning on getting the truck inspected next week and went online to see what will fail it. I noticed in Mass i'll fail if my brake light is on because "it indicates a failure in teh braking system".
Welp mine is on sooooo
any idea what would cause the light to be on and what steps should i do to correct this. braking seems fine to me, not as good as newer vehicles but i expected that.
If i really have to i guess i could just disconnect the light but i'd prefere to fix it if there is a problem.
Thanks in advance
Mine would flicker on and off when my master cylinder was leaking. I found the leak by noticing a little bit of brake fluid running down the face of the booster where the master bolted on.
ok so it can be caused by a leak then, I guess i'll just start looking for leaks and if i cant find anythign by the time i go for inspection i'll jsut unplug the light, and fix it after
You did not say what year the truck is. Is it the brake light or the abs light. A brake light can come on for several reasons one is low fluid or it can be that it thinks the parking brake has been set. Check the fluid level first. There is a wire that runs down to the parking brake assembly unhook that at the switch on the prking brake and see if it goes out. It could also be that the wiring has been pinched some were
sorry its an 85 (in my signature) I'm, not sure what light it is all i know is its red and says brake hehe. I'll check the fluid level and parking brake wire tonight
Red and brake I think is the brake failure light itself (not clear on the earlier trucks). So you need to double check that and fix the issue. Hopefully its just low fluid or a parking brake switch.
The ABS light I want to say is yellow? and on my 88 is in a completely different part of the dash. If your ABS light is on, its no big problem, mine passed at least twice with the ABS light on, I dont' think the guy even said anything. Last year I "fixed" that problem by taping over the bulb
My brake light was on after the dealership flushed and bled the system because they didn't fully bleed it out and I had almost no brakes. Once they re-bled them the light was out and the brakes were fine.
I noticed the other day the light flickering back on when I'd come to a stop so I may try re-bleeding them to see what happens.
could also be a vacuum issue. start easy and work to the hard. check e brake switch first. dont pull the bulb. its there for a reason. a good mechanic looks for things like that. i look harder when someone is trying to okiedoke me.
ive seen guys shamefully pass vehicles with oil soaked shoes and rusted out rotors with only about half the contact surface intact.
Thats a good point. There is a low vacuum switch that could be turning the light on. If the brakes work fine, the issue could be a faulty switch, or wiring to the switch. I want to say the switch is on the passenger fender well, or close by there, but since I was wrong about the lights, it might be someplace else on the earlier trucks.
