Hey, my name is Frank, i live on long island, i'm 16 and i have a 1966 F-250 stepside 2wd. it's got a 300-I6 under the hood and i believe 4.56 gears in the rear. it's in pretty poor shape, but it runs. i would like to have it road worthy by mid to late august.
I have to admit that i am a chevy guy. but i pretty much like anything American, especially trucks. it was my grandfathers and it's been sitting in my backyard since he died (about 10 years) and it sat in a garage in pennsylvania for a few years before that.
I just ordered a new owner's manual and wiring diagram from that "parts shop" link in the top right corner of the page (how long should it take to get here?). i am trying to learn as much about my truck as i possibly can, but i have only been able to find a "repair and tune-up guide for ford pick-ups 1965-86"
This looks to be a friendly and helpful site. i've been looking through it for the last few days and have learned a lot already. now i'm just gonna appologize in advance for all the stupid newbie questions that i'm gonna ask in the next few weeks/months.
Welcome to FTE Frank.
Ask away. Some will tell you n0ot to say the "C" word here, I say bull they all made gold and all made crap at one time or another.
Welcome Frank feel free to ask your questions. Just don't ask how to put a 350 in it and you'll do just fine. I'm with 44dwarf myself they did all make good and bad cars and trucks. I've owned samples of each from AMC to VW. One thing I've learned being a mechanic at various shops is they all will bite and the grime is always black. The rest is personal prefference.
good to see a younger guy falling for old trucks! the first thing your gonna love about the f-250 is NOT HAVING TO REACH INTO THE BACK OF THE ENGINE BAY TO ADJUST TIMING! my personal chevy rant, no big deal. i agree with these other guys, dont worry about brand names, except AMC/renault-the french hated us back then, too- and sent us those cars to prove it! seriously, your granddad would be proud, i'll be glad to help any way i can. good luck!
iv'e got a 65 f 250 myself. the guy i bought it from threw in a full set of original shop manuals, and they are excellent. i think the store on this site has reprints, they are worth the money.
Welcome Frank! You young Guys are the future of this hobby! Saftey first, make a plan, lay out the budget, keep it real and do a little at a time. We are happy to help! Ask us here before you buy anything, youngsters often get parts they don't really need. This series of truck is excellent to learn on and parts are plentiful and cheap! Thanks for saving Grandpa's truck.
Ditto to all the stuff up top. Just remember though, we've all started where you are now so in a few months, you'll be answering more questions than your asking!
