Does anybody out there know if a 1957-1963 styleside tailgate will fit a 1953-1972 stepside?

I'm not even sure I wrote that out right. I'm looking this up for my dad, so If anybody could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions or insights at all are welcome!
