Has anyone had an issue where at start up on the V8 excursion there is a noise / rattle comming from the vicinity of the exaust manifold on the passenger side near the firewall? My 2000 started this about 2K miles ago. At first I thought it was the lifters however it is not. It only happens for about 20 seconds at start up? Have I got the only ghost in the machine?????
Thanks for the reply. I am using a local oil change shop for my changes so I don't know what filter brand they use, however since your reply I have had it changes and the noise is still there. I determined the noise was not lifters by using the ole' stick between the block and my ear method. The guys at the oil shop did have a look while it was up and did note a heat shield with a broken weld. I am wondering why the noise would stop after a bit every time though? Also with a bit more research there is a technical bulletin out on the "Y" pipe for the V8s apparently it is making some noise that is described similar to what I am hearing. I have yet to get it on my ramps and be under the exhaust when it makes the noise to see if it is coming from the "Y" pipe...........

As the pipe heats up, it expands. This probably pushes the broken piece back up against the pipe.

Not sure about this TSB. V10 (early models) were plagaued by flutter. this sound is usually only present under load at 1800-2000 rpm. Check the V10 forum for more info on flutter.
Well the good news is I figured it out. The sad news is it appears to be a quality issue.
Being frustrated I dug out my car ramps and my mechanics creeper and went under to have a look for myself. The issue is coming from the exhaust manifold on the passenger side.
It appears that during assembly the knuckle heads over tightened a manifold bolt, or had a defective one which the head broke off. Since it is the last one on the bottom near the firewall the exhaust on only leaks for a few seconds until things heat up and it seals (at least from a noise perspective).
I will have to say I am disappointed that this along with all of my door lock actuators failing is happening at 48K miles. Unfortunately I have had worse issues with GM products.
The scary thing is that the vehicles that have given me the best service 220K + miles are now owned by Ford. .....Volvo.
The thought of an Excursion on ramps, with me under it is a scary thought for me. I hope you had a good set of stands under it as well. I've seen ramps fold up like an acordian with much less than an X on them.......I don't trust 'em.

This is worth repeating..........................These beasts are heavy!!!!! Use primary and secondary supports on every lift!!
Excellent point. The ramps I use are not the sheet metal ones, they are rated for my RV's weight 8K lbs each wheel. However I absolutely agree, most any SUV is too heavy for the Wal-Mart ramps, especially the X................
Got my lazy *** under there last night and found it...It was one of many? heat sheilds on the exhaust.
Weld was cracked on one of them, so i just pry'd it off.
