04 PSD intermittent smoke

Alright im new to the PSD world and was wondering about an issue I may have here. I have a completely bone stock 04 6.0 PSD with 129000 on the odo.

The issue is this. While going downhill in tow/haul mode when the engine is hovering at that point of it wants to shut off but the injectors are firing randomly and intermittently itll put out a little black smoke.

Another thing is that under extremely light throttle while cruising at 1200-1250 rpm i get a slight resonant humming sound coming from the rear of the truck.

And under the same conditions as above the engine will sputter sometimes while cruising with very very small amounts of white smoke from the exhaust.

Truck runs GREAT under all other conditions. No coolant out the degas bottle. Starts great from what I've heard compared to other trucks in the cold. Below 30s and it fires up right away and missfires for maybe 3-7 seconds then settles into the standard diesel idle. Absolutely love the truck.

Any ideas as to what any of these issues may be. Thanks guys.

Pull codes, get freeze frame data on what the computer is seeing when you have trouble.

Do this:

- move the thread to 6.0 forum, where the real pros hang out.

- Go to their tech folder and start diagnostics.

- Get the spreadsheets for new owners

- Start with the cheapest --- you can borrow a reader from Autozone, or buy one for as little as $30.

Do you have a CEL on right now?

Wrench light?

I have a 4000mile trip ahead of me in a few weeks and want to make sure I have everything taken care of.

How do I move my thread.

I have a cheapo reader, just wasnt sure if that was going to be good enough. It should pick up the soft codes right?

No CEL and No Wrench.

No freeze frame. But I checked and there are no codes active on the truck at all. And all emissions is in a ready state.

Just bought the truck 2 weeks ago.
No Mods at all.
Unknown maintenance history.
I just changed the oil and filter. Motorcraft filter, Valvoline Premium Blue 15-40W. Put 2 bottles of (4oz)Rev-X in the oil as well. Started a bit better after that.

Pulled EGR and cleaned it completely. It was partially stuck open. Maybe .01 of an inch or so.

OK, do a computer reset. Instructions below.

Then --- give it an italian tune up.

Your problems may be simple.

Get the oasis report on it at a Ford dealer.

9.8 is OK (at margins) but may not be critical yet.

Top shape batteries, alternator, cables are a must on this bird.

I like to throw out easy to solve issues first, and at least rule them out.

Your issue can be caused by loose carbon.. jammed EGR valve would do it...

A through carbon cleaning is $$$... so lets see if we can blast it out first.

If you buy a new EGR valve.. do not buy ebay our used... get a brand new one from the dealer.

partsguyed.com can get you one at a good price.

As far as the EGR valve goes it is as clean as new.

Just picked up a pair of new batteries for the truck. It starts great now and seems to start easier as well.

I did have one bad battery out of the two.

I haven't had a chance to do the computer reset yet but will give it a shot here shortly.
