I have 55k miles on a truck in good condition. Recently I drove down a mountain road in 2nd gear and it started blowing white/blue smoke for the last 25 minutes. Speed was between 10-20mph. I initially thought it was dpf cleaning that happened under the 35mph threshold. Air temp was 21-30F. Since then it will blow smoke at acceleration and sometimes at cruise. Not happening at idle. Oil level and coolant level are normal. Does an intermittent smoking problem sound like egr or turbo problem? Truck is in stock configuration.
if your not getting the usual "drive to clean exhaust" type messages , it could be numerous things that should be checked out by a tech...to include oil being sucked into the intake for intermittent issues or bad turbo seals for lingering ones. how does the oil level look?
If the cap stays put in the hole you don't have a cracked or melted piston... The reason you want to check blow by is because its very possible you have an injector hanging open intermittently. Watch your oil level, if this is the case it will rise. But a hung injector will often times melt a piston...
You could also have turbo seal problems.
To test the injectors you need to get it into a shop an have an injector balance test done. To check the turbo you pull the down pipe away from the turbo and check for oil and shaft play. The turbos on these are a bit of a pita to check though. Either way if you don't have a scan tool bring the truck into a shop to be looked over.
Another one with smoke issues! When mine regens it blows heavy blue smoke out the tailpipe for the duration of the cycle. Ford told me that was normal. I told them NO WAY! It's in the shop now. Ford engineers told them to remove the cab to run tests and take things apart - turbos, downpipe, dpf, oil leak, injectors, or whatever this time.
I want all this checked before I go the delete route next week.
If its during regen it should last about 30 sec to 2 min... You WILL see white smoke, it is just raw fuel that isn't burning fully. Its possible you have a bad valve seat... But that isn't all that common.
No problems found. The new program allows the truck to run exhaust cleaning at low speeds I now know how to shut the exhaust cleaning cycle. After the oil change things have improved.
