Well been using 4x4 a lot lately and noticed that sometimes when I turn the ESOF switch on the 4x4(hubs locked) light comes on instantly and sometimes it takes 5-10 seconds... would this be considered normal?? why the lag before the light comes on??
I don't know why it should take 5 to 10 seconds. I might take a second or two for the transfer case to shift because it has to bring the front driveline, differential and drive axles up to speed but that should only take a second or two.
It's possible that your transfer case is having difficulty synchronizing the gears. You might make note of how fast you're driving when you shift into 4WD and try to determine if it takes longer at higher speeds.
I wasn't going very fast approx 5-10 mph accelerating .. about 8 inches of fresh snow on the ground.... Only did it once... I tried to recreate the lag and couldn't... Just read in owners manual that it could take up to 45 seconds...Depending on conditions...
The first thing that happens when you turn the dial is the transfer case shifts. Or at least it tries to. Once it completes the shift, it turns on the 4x4 light and then attempts to lock the hub. There is nothing that verifies back to the module that the hubs lock.
When you shift out of 4WD, the transfer case disengages and then the hubs attempt to unlock. It may take them a while to do this, depending on the conditions.
It's possible that when you tried to shift into 4WD the hubs were already locked. If your rear wheels were slipping at all the transfer case could not complete the shift until the front and rear drive line speed matched.
David I believe you may be right the truck was slipping and I accelerated to keep it moving ... Couldnt get it to do it again... still dont get what the conditions are that could delay up to 45 seconds

If you have the front hubs locked and are accelerating (spinning the rear wheels) then the transfer case will not be able to engage.
