Question E40D-- excess play in driveshaft

Hey, i have a 96 f-150 4.9l shortbed, standard cab, 6inch lift with a E40D and when i take off from a stop light the truck feels like it "clunks" in the rear like the u joints a worn out. I looked at both ends of the shaft and their old but still tight. I did notice that the driveshaft at the slipyoke seems to have a bit of excess play when you move it and it appears that the shaft moves in and out pretty regularly which i am guessing is cause i have a lift their is some axle wrap and the shaft moves more. Is their a way to lube or service this point. I've been told if they a real dry they can cause the "clunking".

Thanks for your time,
-Jesse

The tailshaft bushing is splash lubed by transmission fluid and should never go dry. In high performance applications,a common mod is to add an external lube line from one of the pressure test ports to keep the bushing sufficiently lubed at high speeds, but that shouldn't be necessary on your truck. The bushing will wear out over time, though. If it's worn to the point that the slip yoke is sloppy, then the only cure is to pull the tailshaft housing off of the transmission and replace the bushing. The slip yoke itself may be worn out also.

I did notice that the seal is soft rubber, is their a way to grease it externally just so it slides better? Can i just droop the suspension and throw a bunch of grease on the slip??
