Brake Pedal Bushing Install

Any advice on how best to install a Brake Pedal bushing in an F-1?

I heated the pedal to 550F, froze the bushing and was not able to get the job done. I'm thinking, use the Pedal shaft as a press aid with a some sizing compound? One of the few things I don't have is a press.

Thanks,

Dawgie

A press is the best way to get it done. Check with any local transmission shop or machine shop. They'll probably press them in for you for just a couple bucks. It you try any means whatsoever of pounding them in, there is a very high risk of deforming them and either rendering them completely useless or making such a mess that you'll have to spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to file and dress them back into shape so the shaft will fit back through. If you have a decent size bench vise, it can often be used as a bushing press. Just make sure that you put a piece of hardwood or plastic between the bushing and the vise jaw. Even when you get them in correctly without any damage they are still sometimes tight on the shaft. If you take it to a machine shop, they can ream it to the exact size of the shaft. In your own shop with no reamer, a brake cylinder hone works OK, but it can be slow going. I wouldn't use the shaft as a press mandrel for that reason. You might not get it back out!

Well said. That's pretty much the answer I was expecting. I'm only doing the Brake Pedal (Auto Trans). I bought an extra bushing just in case I hosed it up. I'll go with a press. We have one in our race shop at work.

Thanks,

I bet you can do it with a good heavy vise. Like said you can't do it with any shaft inside that restricts it compressing down as you drive it in. Might also be worth mike'ing the OD of the bushing and the ID of the pedal; shouldn't be more than .002 - .003" interference at the same temps. Who knows the quality of repro parts.

Just as a follow-up for anyone elses benefit, I pressed the bushing in at work and like Blue Oval said, it was too tight. 5 Minutes with a brake honer and some WD and it fits perfectly.

Thanks

I read on the HAMB (or Ford Barn) that other people found the same problems; the bushings are just flat made to the wrong size.
