I have P codes coming out my ears. My 96 F150 4.9L seams to have a new P code everytime I fix something. Now I have P174 P171 P420 and P443. I'm ready to pull out what little bit of hair I have left.

Reason: typo
How does the motor run and what is the fuel milage? P171/174 are saying the fuel trims are at the lean limit.. meaning the motor is running rich, so if milage has gone down that makes sense but these codes don't really give you anything to chase. P420 is complaining about the downstream O2 sensor, either it's bad or the cat is bad. P443 is for an evap control valve malfunction, that is the valve that controls the release of fuel vapors collected from the tanks into the engine, it's usually located on a rubber hose that runs between the throttlebody and the charcoal canister on the passenger frame rail below the rad.
I'd suggest fixing the two problems that have codes directly associated with them, clear the memory and see what comes back. if you still get the lean adaptive limit codes then you have other problems such a leaking fuel pressure regulator or an injector stuck open.
I got the truck in January 2010 and it's felt like it ran a bit rough from the time I got it. I don't know how it ran before that but I can guess it wasn't all that great as it was a job site/work truck before I got it. The MPG is about 13 city/15 highway, not so good I think. I kept hearing a sputtering/tapping sound when I excelerated and was told it had a leak in the tube between the EGR valve and the exhoust manifold. After I replaced the tube and the upper intake manifold gasket (hard type) I got lean and EVAP codes (no O2 senser code). I plugged the hose between the throttle body and the EVAP senser (?), cleared the codes and the leans codes stayed out but the EVAP came back, I was told the EVAP senser was bad so I replaced it and reconnected the hose from the throttle body. Now lean codes and EVAP code are back, the O2 code is new. I'll look closer at the 2 hoses connected to the charcoal canister, I know 1 goes to that EVAP control vale but I'm not sure where the other went. Thanks for your feedback, I'm very greatfull. I'll post again after I've taken that closer look.
