I have a powerstroke with sterlingrear its 2wd right now but im going to make it 4x4 i have all the parts i just gotta do it. I just want to make it a taller gear. My dmfriend had a 6.0 with egr delete and 3.55s and getting 19.5 mpg highway on 40s and it would smoke the tires right off so i think diesels like tall gears. A 300 i6 is gutless and could benefit from 4.10s because it cant go 70 anyways lol sry that was mean... But on my psd it could really use a taller gear

My 1-ton '52 *****'s Pick-up has left hand lug nuts on one side.

My F150 has 3.55s and I feel it would benefit from 4.10s in terms of power and fuel economy. I don't know much about how the 300 performs across its RPM band, but the 302 in my other truck is sluggish off the line just like you describe. You need to get to about 15 MPH before it starts really pulling. For light driving you don't notice it but if trying to pull hard off the line its almost like waiting for a turbo to spool. Feels like mush.

Jim Allen has what I hear is a really nice book on differentials that I've been meaning to get. Never got around to it though.
Jim Allens book is great, he wrote it with "Randy's Ring and Pinion" it has awesome info.
I have an autographed copy. (I was trying to find a "snob" face/carachter but there isn't one.)

You made you point ,LOL

also 61,s with 308's wont accept any lower gears IIRC , I just went thru this on a buddys 76 with a swapped in rear.

Hey Russ

Was there some sort of deal with the Dana 61s where you could swap out the carrier from the 60 to get lower gear ratios? (numerically higher)?

Did some parts book looking. According to the Dana book and another parts book.

61 Semi floats show parts listing for 300 and 307 gears.
61 full floats show 331 and 307 gears for both limited slip and open diffs for diff. carriers they call low ratio. For high ration carriers they show up to a 456 for open carriers and 410 in limited. They show for 61-1's and -2's .
Do not know the difference between a -1 and -2. Curious though. I will find out.

According to the parts books the same carrier is used for gears down to 354's.

Of coarse. These books are show every option that Dana made for them. Allot of them are discontinued and finding a set new is impossible. Not to many companies cut gears for differentials anyway. Like battery manufacturers. You can count them on one hand.

I have been called by people looking for a set of 300 gears for a 61. They must not be made anymore and hard to find. Don't know why a 307 gear wouldn't do what they wanted to do. Didn't ask.
