First oil change

Hey guys,

I know this has probably been answered 10,000,000 times but I searched and never found a definitive answer. I'm going my first oil change on my 2010 f350 5.4l. I know it has the synthetic blend from the factory. would it be ok for me to switch to the motorcraft fully synthetic now? or should I use the blend one more change to help things break in? I know these new motors don't need much of a break in but I just want to be sure. Thanks a lot for the help!

Derek

The best advice I can give you is to do what the owners manual says.

As a side note, my BMW manual says 15,000 miles or one year. which ever comes first. And I'm told Porsche recommends 20,000 miles.

Today's engines and oils are very much improved over what they used to be.

While I agree that todays oils are much improved I would make the first oil change much sooner than the reccomended intervals. In talking to an automotive engineer who ran the R&D for a major oil additive company he said that all new engines will have particles shear off as the parts "mate" to eachother. He suggested 1000 to 2000 for the first change and i have followed his advise ever since.

As far as Porsche is concerned you are correct they are reccomending rediculous OCI's. In their defense the oil capacity of most of Porsche's flat 6 engines are a whopping 10 quarts comparred to 5 or 6 quarts for most other manufacturers. However, I don't know of anyone who let's their $100K car go that long. Most I know are doing it yearly or 10K whichever comes first for their street cars.

when i bought my 03' crown vic new i changed the oil at 1000 miles and had the oil analyzed and could not beleive the amount of left over silicon from the engine casting process...it took a couple oil changes to get the silicon level to normal. i would do the first couple oil changes a bit early to get the sand cast and break in metal out...the oil lab reports were proof of what is happening during engine break in.

I would stay with the blend for a few oil changes before switching if I were to switch. If it was my truck i would stay with the blend though.

I run my 99 328i for the 15,000 miles, using 7 quarts of Synth 5w-30 as recommended by BMW and the engines runs the same as it did new. But its not a 100K car either. Mileage on the car is 147,000. I started using synthetic oil in my F250 SD. Haven't really noticed a huge difference.

If I remember right the owners' manual says not to use full synthetic for the first couple of changes.
