So my truck failed the state safety inspection today due to a leaking steering gear box. they said it was leaking from the shaft. My question is would I be better served going with a rebuilt or just resealing the one that is in there. I do have a lot of play in my steering. I have search a little through the forum but cant find a step by step on how to do this on my own. Does anyone know a good site with instructions and pictures?
1. Pull the pitman arm off
2. pull the snap ring out that holds in the seal
3. make sure there is fluid in the pump, put a pan under the steering box,
fire up the truck and turn the wheel all the way to lock, Bump it off lock a couple times
gently and the pressure will push the seal pack out.
4. clean everything up including digging out the snap ring groove
5. Re-assemble.
Viola....
Like mentioned before the hardest part is getting the taper on the pitman arm to pop, but its usually not bad with the right puller.
