Can you tell if the holes in the tranny housing are threaded or not?

I think the bottom line is you broke the spacer and it will need to be replaced. And that will require removing the tranny to do so.

And how is it that the spacer could have broke. Bolts being to tight, starter not being in correct location, i have heard some starters need to be shimmed?

Ok look at the pics of the link that is provided then whip out the credit card and buy it cuz your gonna need it...After the tranny and flywheel are removed you will see that there are more bolts that connect the plate to the engine so the tranny can bolt up to the outer holes that are on the bell housing.

Now just guessing but the guy who put your tranny in was not a gentle person while installing or removing the tranny and could of hit the tranny where the starter line up, or removed the starter and was ruff about putting it back in....At this point its anybodies guess????

...or the bolts being too loose and caused some flexing on the spacer and stressed out the metal. I think it's only aluminum.

Actually, the plate is just a sapcer between the engine and transmission. The bolts for the transmission go through it into the engine block. There are 2 dowel pins that locate the spacer on the back of the engine, no mechanical fasteners are used.

Correct, it is aluminum. Cast aluminum at that, doesn't take much to break it.

It is possible the guy who did the trans work pryed against it to remove the trans and fractured it, and over time the starter torquing on it finally made it crack all the way through.

Good luck getting them to own up to anything.
It is just a guess on my part as to how it broke.

Either way, the trans has to come out to replace it.
