Random question but... I was wondering if anyone has ever patched the round wheel arches of a 87-96/97 truck into a 80-86 fender?
I think too much and some times it gets me into truble...LOL... I like the 80-86 front end more so than the 87-91, and was thinking of putting the clean front end off the white 86 below onto one of my other trucks before i junk it... Of course the wheel wells wouldn't match front to back. So i was wondering if anyone has had any luck with patching the round style arch into the older 80-86 fenders????????
Yeah i want to put the 80-86 front clip on the 87-91 truck. But after you do that the fender arches won't match the bed wheel well arches. the 80-86 arch is a little flatter in the middle of the arch. So i was wondering if anyone has cut the round arch off the 87-96 fender and welded them back into the 80-96 style.
well that was my main concern... I was just wondering if anyone else had done it or if someone had seen a pic of a truck done like this. I was thinking maybe early Feb i might have some time to play with this. It's not like I'll be loosing much if i screw it all up... The 2 of the trucks below are just parts donors so i have extra pieces to play with... Worse comes to worse I can always just throw it all in the back of one truck and send it to the recyclers...
more to the point though... I was wondering if I could just cut the top of the arch out to make it round or whether i'd have to cut into the bottom of the fender...
well the body lines match going from fender to cab in the 80-96 years (ie purple circle)... So if you cut the arch and 1/2 of the back side of the fender out you'd be matching (ie red cut lines)... I think the real trick would be the front arch and how that meets with the front rolled lip (ie yellow/green area) of the 80-86 fender. For now I am just comtemplating the possibility... It would be a cool custom touch to add to a truck if you could morph the 2 fenders together!!!!
I'm sure you could blend the front part easy enough... If I had a couple fenders layin around I'd cut them up n try it,but I don't.. Hell I have to fix some rust on my 94 yet.... I don't like body work too much, But I can do a great job it need be
Here's a further thought... I saw some guys on tv do a fiberglass mold to make a custom fiberglass hood... this might be a good option to make a fiberglass mold of each section of the fenders that you like and then mash the 2 molds together later to form 1 mold of the fender you want... This way you can make a new set of fiberglass fenders that you want and never have a rusting problem on the front fenders again... I know this is above and beyond but I have a buddy that can get me all the mat and resin i need for next to nothing...

I hate body work too... I don't like working metal that much... fiberglass doesn't bother me as much as metal does...
There was a thread in the 73-79 forum about the front and rear wheel arch being the same. Don't know about 87 style. Can you get a hold of a rear wheel opening patch panel to compare?? I might want to due the same to my 86 as I have a 91 bed to go on someday...
