the bed on my 82 is beyond saving, i would need the back 2 feet of the floor, plus the tail peice that ties the bed together, and various holes and patches throughout.
i have found a couple beds from 87-96 that aren't too bad, one is the color i want.
my question is, would it be possible to take that bed, and then use 80-86 wheel arch panels to get the body lines to match the front fenders?
Torch + welder =yes. Not sure how the inner wheel arch panel would line up with the 86 panel. A member on here was thinking about using 87-96 bed wheel arch panels on the front fenders of his 86 so that front and rear openings would match.
this isnt gonna be a show truck for now, maybe in the future. i just want to get it on the road, so i may just stick any bed i can get for now.....will there be any issues using the newer lights or will the bulbs go in ok? also i have one tank, will the filler neck bolt to the newer bed or will i need to swap that too?
Speaking of tailgates the latch hardware changed between 86/87. I don't know if you were thinking of using the earlier tailgate or not but you may have to swap some hardware around to make it work. It's not a big deal; just make sure you get/save both sets so you have everything you need to make the swap if you plan on using the early gate on the later bed.
The wheel arches can be used, but I don't know about the outer wheelhouses. I suspect they wouldn't be too hard to modify and if you get a bet with rusty wheel arches you can always get the outer wheelhouses. NPD carries them and I think LMC does as well now.
I'm planning on swapping a 95 bed onto my 81 someday... i just havent gotten to it yet. My plan is to buy two new 81 box sides when it comes paint time.
Ive tossed 87-96 beds onto pre-86 trucks before, it doesnt look horribly out of place.
There is also a notch on the top of the bedrails on the 80-86 and the rear body lines at the taillights protrude where the 87-96 are smooth. That's why the body lines on the lights and tailgates changed.
