While I am loving my new 2000 Ex., I did not realize there were no headrests on the back row. Has anyone ever had some made up? Not even sure it can be done. Thanks and Happy New Year.
If you look up user name "Monsta" he has a few pictures in his gallery and a write up of what he did. He is not on much after selling his last X, but visits once in a while. That is if his pictures are still there.
I did mine. I got some ford explorer head rests with a matching color code. Very simple to do. Removed the upholstery from the rear seat, drill holes into seat frame. Now replace the upholstery. Instead of making holes in the leather for the posts, I simply removed some stitching from the interface between the fabric on the back of the seat and the leather. This gave me a nice place for the headrest post to fit. Now, place headrest post through the upholstery and into the seat frame. Spot weld the headrest into place. Obviously, they are not removeable nor adjustable, which is fine. I originally bought some of the plastic adaptor sleeves that fit into the frame and allow the headrest to be adjustable, but to fit them into the frame, I would have had to drill out ALOT more metal, and I was afraid that would weaken it. So I opted for the aforementioned option. Works great, looks much more "finished."
I read somewhere that one member had it done at a specialty shop for around $400. Another used Mercury Villager headrests to make them adjustable (maybe the tubes are smaller so the guide sleeves didn't require too much additional drilling). He used retaining clips in the headrest holes to keep them from moving. Not terribly pretty but effective.
