Oh ok I misunderstood I thought you took the pcm out of the equation and wired them directly to the battery on a switch. I was saying don't forget to turn them off once you turn them on for colder weather so they aren't running constantly and get burned up right away.
I did exactly that on a 81 Jetta! I was to cheap to buy a new relay so I wired it to the battery on a toggle switch. No good, especially if my wife drove the car!
I got my Stancore Relay yesterday via USPS. I ordered it on the 28th, it was in transit on the 29th, got it on the 30th. That is good service I think, from Texas.
The gp is there so you get to reference the size thats a big relay. Now just need some warmer weather and I'll change it, its only about 5 above now.
Rich, my picture is a little blurry but you can get the idea. The yellow connectors in front and down a little is where I spliced in for a toggle switch if I want to turn GP's off.
I like the idea of having a toggle switch, I'm just a little lost as to which wires to splice in and where.. Thanks
Jesse, Its been five years since I did this but I'll try to explain. If you look at the plug that has the two small wires on it that go to the GPR, look at the clip that holds the plug ends together. The wire on the right when looking at the locking clip is the wire I cut in two. I ran a wire from one of the cut ends to a toggle switch and the other connection on the toggle switch to the other cut wire end. Clear as mud? All this does is not allow juice to the GP's. The PCM thinks the glow plugs are running.
So........ will it get the GP's hotter or something to start better?
On our trucks the relays are a weak link in the system and will cause GP's to not function properly. Valve cover gaskets and under valve cover gaskets are also a common problem, the gasket connectors going to the GP's and injectors are often found to need repair or replacement.
No the Stancor relay alone will not get the glow plugs hotter, but it has been deemed a good replacement and should give better service (last longer).
I wish I didn't throw out my stock relay because this would be a good test. I'd imagine that because the stancor pulls more voltage, that the gp's are in fact getting hotter. but I'm not sure if it's pulling more wattage or amperage also. (wait for electrical guys to correct me).
The stancor simply has larger contacts to handle the current drawn by the glow plugs. the stock relay was fine when the truck was new so I wonder if glow plugs tend to draw more current with age and thats why our trucks go through them so quickly. bigger contacts allow the full power of the batteries to heat the gps. I'm ordering 8 new GPs too. replacing both batteries in a couple weeks. should be good to go for a while.
