The starter on my 2001 350 4x4 will run or turn if you will .But it will not engage into the flywheel . I thought it was the soleniod on the starter so I replaced it . No change in the engagement of the starter . So I tryed jumping across the terminals on the starter and it engaged and cranked the truck . So then I replaced the solenoid on the inner fender . It cranked several times no problems . It sat for 2 days then I went to crank it. Back to the way it was . No engagement in the flywheel . I then jumped across the solenoid on the inner fender and it cranked . I used the truck all that evening cranked every time that night . Went ot crank it the next morning . No engagement again .Jumped across the solenoid on the fender no engagement just spinning the starter . I slid under the truck and jumped it at the starter it engaged one time then it just spun the starter with no engagement . Is it time for a starter ? ?
Yes, sort of...
The starter drive clutch (often called the bendix) is bad. The starter must be completely disassembled to change it. You may be better off just changing the starter because the bushings and brushes in the motor are likely not far behind.
Found a new starter for 145.00 at Rock Auto online . And no core charge ! There is also one on there for 71.95 but it said shipping would be delayed for 3 days due to non stocked item. Wonder what the deal is with this item? This one is new also . I am thinking about going with the first one . And then later having my old starter rebuilt for a spare .
I want a longer warranty than the $145 offers.
Looks like my rebuilder has gone out of business, so-----. Advance Auto Parts: Starter by Remy New - Part 99402 99402 at reg price from Advance is about the same as RockAuto .
Second from top 2001 FORD F-350 SUPER DUTY Starter Motor
Same warranty and Advance is local and therefore quicker (they also have an online special making it the best deal at the moment-around $160 plus $10 core.)
