I've been trying to identify what the front axle is in my 1973 F100. The axle is NOT original (came from a 1975 F150), but I've identified it as a Dana 44 with the help of THIS website. Picture below:
However, I'd like to find out what the gear ratio is in this axle. I can't imagine that the PO would have installed an axle with a different ratio than the rear (3.5; it appears to be the original Ford 9"?), but I'd still like to know. Where on the axle is the "tag" that has the code? Anywhere? The only numbers I could find were on the forward side of the axle "tube". Picture below; the numbers read
"10 11 2B4 603394 1":
Lastly, while looking for a tag on the topside of the axle, I noticed that there is a bolt/screw missing from the top of the axle. Is this bolt available at parts stores? Picture below:
603394-1 crosses over to a Dana 44-7F 3.54 ratio, non-locking w/ free running hubs 3000 lb capacity
Also, the axle vent is p/n C4TZ-4022-A
Green Sales, Cincinnati, OH has 34 (800) 543-4959
Dennis Carpenter, Concord, NC has 4 (704) 786-8139

Thanks for the help. Any idea if a 3.54 in front and a 3.5 in the rear would cause any issues at the transfer case? I've read that if the front and rear axles have different gear ratios that that can cause problems in the transfer case.

1973 F100 - rear axle code on the warranty plate = 08
I'm not a 4WD expert by any stretch of the imagination. IMHO I don't think a difference of 0.04 will make any difference. I've heard that the ratios front to rear were slightly different.
And you are correct, an 08 axle code is a Ford 9" 3.50 rear.
