Gas Filler

Does anyone have a problem with gas "burping" back out of the gas filler??

I have to pump gas VERY slowly to keep it from happening. It will also puddle at the mouth of the neck and run down the side of the truck unless I turn the pump nozzle perfectly.

I was thinking it was a vent problem or a filler neck hose problem, but it does it on both of my tanks.

Also, it is probably related, but a lot of vaccum builds-up in the tanks until I remove the gas cap. If I remove the gas cap with a full tank, gas comes spewing back out of the tank (I found this out once and learned my lesson!).

Where are the vents located?? Is the cap vented?? I just put new locking gas caps on and they are worse than the one cap that was already on the truck when I bought it.

Thanks for any info!

Gas Filler

This is a VERY common problem with these trucks (if your tank is between the frame rails in the rear). The filler hose that goes from the gas cap to the tank is almost perfectly horizontal, and it's squished between the bed and the frame.

On my beater plow truck with a wood flat bed, I have the board over the filler hose loose so I can pull the hose off and pump right into the tank.

On my 78, I have a steel flatbed which sits higher than the stock bed, and I still have to pump slow.

Do a search in this forum and you'll find several posts on this subject.
