Fuel tank problem or not?

When I fuel up and open the cap on the filler neck I always hear a hiss. Never could figure if it was pressure or vacuum. Today, after changing oil, I opened my fuel filter bleeder to check for water and it just started slurping and gurgling with no diesel coming out. I lowered the truck, removed the fuel tank filler cap and heard the hiss. Raised back up and opened the filter bleeder and diesel came out. I now know the hiss is a vacuum. Is this normal? If this tank is vented I have a problem somewhere.

there is a plastic L vent on the end of a tube, up by the filler hose as I recall.

I saw that in a pic while searching for this problem. I will have to check that and see if it is plugged. I've always thought the hiss, be it pressure or vacuum, was normal.

I don't get a hiss when I open the gas cap

Mine does it all the time if I take the fuel cap off right after shutting it down unless I let it sit and idle for a while before opening it up or let it sit after shutting it down.

So far there hasn't been any issues from it.

Mine seems to depend on tank level. I was 44 miles from empty today and it had quite a vacuum. It had sat about three hours before I cracked open the fuel drain valve and then the filler cap later.

I almost never take the fuel cap off unless the tank is empty and I'm fueling it up, so I couldn't tell you much about when it has a lot of fuel in it.
