Replacing my old ignition module. when i install the new module truck will start fine and run noticeably better. when i shut the truck off i can restart within the first few seconds just fine but if i wait a minute and try to restart it strains to turn over as if the battery was dead or my timing had been altered. I can unplug the two wire red and white plug from the module turn the engine over and then plug it back in and the truck will start normal but if i shut it down the same thing happens. My old box was oozing and just looked like hell so for $30 I got an autozone box i think it's a duralast?
If i plug the old box back in it starts normal every time but doesn't run as well.
I don't have an emission label to get a timing spec so i'm refering to the autozone site for the info. The vin# says it should be a 1979 400 I don't think i can ID the motor with 100% certinty without opening it up.
That's where I have it set 12 degrees btdc it doesn't seem to matter where it's at, the engine runs great with the new module but won't start without unplugging it and turning the engine over.
I had a 77 ford thunderbird with a 400m motor and there were 2 different modules that advance auto sold me for the same year and you have to look on the module for the same color mark, its either paint or a plastic strip.
Yeah, i'm looking at the wire layout and "grommet color" on my new module and wondering about that?
The old and new modules have the same color wires but they're in a different order on the module?
I'm not certain the exact year of this motor the truck was put together before I bought it. The guy I bought it from had know idea what he was talking about. He said the motor was a 351m but i see the vin says it should be a 400 unless it's been changed? I've been thru countless online sources that all lead me to the f102 module for all of the 351/400 engines for about all years. Can they test this module?
