I have been reading some threads on here about sloppy steering. Which made me go under my truck and while my wife was turning the wheel I noticed that I might have to replace my pitman arm I replaced I have already replaced my draglink, inner outter tie rods, the sleeve everything BUT the pitman arm.. I have been looking everywhere to buy one, napa, autozone, lmc, bronco graveyard, npd, dennis carpenter and no one sells one for a 2wd!!!
Anyone know where I can buy one??? Im getting tired of sloppy steering while driving 85 on interstate!!!!
The part number you need is D2TZ-3590-B
Pitman Arm
Fits:
73-up F100-250 reg and supercab under 8100 GVW w/ power steering.
I couldn't locate any dealers that have one in stock.
Just out of curiosity, whats wrong with yours? Generally this part doesn't wear and only gets replaced if it is somehow damaged.
Have you checked the coupling above the steering box? These go bad and cause sloppy steering too.
when i'm driving down the road im always drifting left to right or right to left. If the police were behind me I would get pulled over in a heart beat. They would probably think im drunk..lol
I noticed that when the wheel is turning the pitman arm has a little slack in it..like it's a little loose

The pitman arm is splined, it would be really unusual for it to wear. Have you checked the steering box itself? Its not unusual for the sector shaft to wear in the housing. Thats one of the weak areas of this box. There is no bushing or bearing in the housing for the sector shaft. The shaft rides on the cast iron housing and can wear, causing sloppy steering.
Steering box is leaking while I was down looking around today I noticed it leaking. All this time I thought it was my trans leaking!! I did a search on here lastnight and I heard about people getting their boxs from a place in seattle called red head steering. Im thinking bout calling them on monday. It doesn't look to big of a job to replace the steering box.
If you are thinking of getting a rebuilt box, go straight to Redhead out of Seattle. After two Moog and two Atsco rebuilts, plus all of the other parts, my truck still wandered all over. With the Redhead box, it finally steers the way it did when it was new. I think they machine the housings and install bearings. Anyway, you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble with Redhead.
ABSOLUTLEY!!!! Red Head Steering. Thats what I have on my restoration project.
They actually rebuild the unit. They address the weak spots in the units, they bore out the housing and press bearings in for the sector shaft to ride. They also regrind the raceways and use oversize ***** in the sector.
You can send your box to them and they'll rebuild it or you can have them send you one out of stock and then return yours as a core.
The cost is inline with what you would pay for a "spray and pray" rebuilt from one of the chain stores.
How big of a job is it to install a swaybar? Sons project truck is a 76 f100 with 38's and after a new steering box and steering stabilizer, it is still all over the road. Heavier axels will have to come later, but for now we have to get back and forth to school without running anyone over,
I just ordered front and rear Hellwig swaybars. If they come in before I have to leave to go back to work (I'm on a 2 week break) I'll let you know how the install goes.
Funny story, I bought a set of Hellwig bars about 10 years ago for future install on my project. Flash forward 10 years. Now that I'm actually working on my project I couldn't find the bars and had to order new ones. I figure the day after I install the new ones the old ones will magically reappear.
