I ordered the dfuser external coolant filter yesterday,, eta 2-3 days. I will put it in and let you know, will keep you informed of the progress.
If the original oil cooler make it 110,000 or so, and after cleaning the coolant system to where the water was crystal clear,,, it seems strange that the coolant side of the cooler or egr could be plugged. But At this point it is the next step. So we shall see. At least I am improving my mechanical skills.
It is not unusual at all to have casting sand still an issue after 110,000 miles --- especially if the engine was not run hard then run run hard.
If you get casting sand in the filter, assume the oil / egr cooler has gone again, and keep running the filter until it is reasonably clean --- then do the cooler /egr and flush again.
Be sure you do VC-9 and follow the flush instructions exactly.

I'm glad your bottles had instructions, mine didn't. I asked the tech how long they ran it with the vc-9.
I was going to add the external coolant filter, but I am clueless on how to check the coolant system for blockage, especially knowing that the coolant temperatures never get out of the normal operating ranges.
Other than putting in the cooler filter is there anything else you would do??
I'm wondering if you don't have (if it's even possible) an issue with the oil cooler bypass and/or filter bypass letting your oil go through too quickly. Just a thought.
I don't know if this would help or not in diagnosing this problem. Would a infrared thermometer help look for hot and not so hot spot in the cooling and oil system? Just a thought.

The TSB says afterward. This conversation comes up quite often and there are lots of opinions. Doing the flush with a plugged cooler does not allow a complete flush of the whole cooling system and chances of a new cooler plugging are very small, although it obviously happens.

I realy think VC-9 before then watch coolant filter for trash and replace the coolers if filter doesn't catch much trash within 1k miles. As long as filter is catching a lot of trash,it would seem better to prolong cooler replacement.
There will be some cases where one or both coolers have already failed,leaving no choice.
I would think having oil in the cooling system and freezing tempature would present the most challanges in properly cleaning up before new coolers.
The purpose of the VC-9 is really more of a rust remover, which is a great idea. In my case, as many others, the oil coolers are plugging up from other matter. If you subscribe to the silicate drop-out theory, there will be this gelatinous goo circulating in your cooling system. This MUST come out prior to replacing the oil cooler. When I replaced the cooler the second time, I removed the radiator, back flushed EVERYTHING, removed block plugs, used compressed air...... If you're willing to do this then you could probably get away with doing the VC-9 after the cooler, but by all means flush the hell out of it BEFORE replacing. Use tap water and a hose, replace it with distilled afterwords.
I do not have the knowledge that a lot of the others on this forum but in the last couple of years I have had two radiators that I and others thought were good until you take the top and bottom of of them. They were plugged up one was my stolen 03 6.0 with approx, 60k and had done the oil and egr coolers and one was in my 92 Buick regal with approx 60k and heater did not work but after checking temp door, changing heater core, thermostat, water pump, the radiator was all that was left. I realize 3.1 is not a 6.0 but just because water goes in the top and comes out the bottom does not mean it is good. Also all maintenance was kept up to date on both vehicles.
