Hey I'm new to this forum and I'm also a new proud owner of a 83 f250 with a 93 7.3IDI N/A. . My question is has anybody ever experienced the trans shifting from 1st straight to 3rd? (C6 trans if you haven't read the title) I can take off slow or fast and as long as its in "D" it will go straight to 3rd. While shifting to 3rd, it does kinda freewheel for a sec and finally go into 3rd. If i manually shift 1,2,D 2nd gear works.
I do have to say the kickdown linkage is connected, but not in a functional way, ie: when full throttle is applied the kickdown linkage bearly moves.
Seeing as the truck does have a 6.9 to 7.3 swap, would the throttle/kickdown setup be different between the two? Could the kickdown linkage be causing the trans to do this? I have not yet checked the vacuum modulator on the trans (lack of time due to work) but maybe thats whats causing it?
Ok just checked the vacuum modulator line at the trans and it had 13in of vacuum. Disconnected the kickdown linkage and its still having the same symptoms.
I'm going to get a new modulator tomorrow and see if that does anything.
if it is shifting manually from 1st, to 2nd, to 3rd, but not automatically when in drive i would bet it is vacuum related. I dont think it would be mechanical....but then again i dont know the trans issues very well. You could try the modulator and then possibly the VRV on the IP. But make sure none of the vacuum lines are old and leaking. how well can the system hold vacuum? like if you went out in the am and pulled off a vacuum line would it hiss or do nothing?
If the vrv (vaccum regulator valve) on the side of the injection pump is set up right you don't need the kickdown on these trucks. I never even had mine hooked up. The vrv will make it kickdown for you. The C6 that was in my truck before I swapped in the T18 shifted some what like yours does. I could barely notice second gear and it was in second for only a second before shifting into 3rd. It did not ever seem to "free wheel" but it did shift real fast. I also replaced the modulator vavle on that one and it made no difference. I always figured it was just the ratio of the diesel c6.
Thanks for the input guys! I just replaced the vacuum modulator and it didnt change anything....The vacuum lines are fairly new, soft and no cracking. I forgot to mention earlier that when manually shifting 1,2 3 it slips like hell when in 2nd gear. 1st and 3rd are perfect. 2nd gear bands shot? torque converter bad? Although now that i think about it, if the torque converter was shot it would be slipping in all gears right?
sounds mechanical then with the latest info, if 2nd slips like hell manaually then yeah its mechanical. Get someone to take a look at it and also you could try the seafoam trans tune. But likely you have a mechanical problem. Get it looked at now before its worse. These trans's are pretty cheap to tinker on so get it looked at now!

i havent installed the kickdown since i had the transfer case out about 8 months ago! You really dont need it!
