I have the ZF-6 6 speed manual transmission in my 99 F-250 with PSD..a whirring noise just started when I shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd but goes away at the higher gears, 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th..it only happens when I move the stick..is this a synchro problem? Shifts are still smooth and no gear grinding..yet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Gears hold - no random popping out or getting stuck; no slipping of clutch - the clutch moves in/out with no problems and only about 40K miles on current clutch assy (TO &pilot bearing, Pressplate etc). In my sleep I was thinking lubricant --- that's reaching 70K miles, but no signs of leaks - it could be just plain worn out. That will be the next step to change fluid out this evening. Thank you gentlemen for your thoughts and replies.

Reason: more better
A worn synchro will cause the gears to grind when shifting. When does the whirring noise happen? Does it do it if you accelerate and then just hold the clutch in and not shift? Shift into neutral and coast instead? Do it on downshift between the same gears?
Let us know if the fluid change helps or fixes it.
Well alright - changed the fluid out and..it was low...really low. The noise from shifting went down a bit but is still there. I would've posted earlier but recuperating from selling my kidney to fill the ol diezl tank..ugh. I'm taking the advice posted many times before and will drive the old girl until she tells me no more. Everything works normally, just a short whine when shifting the stick from 2nd to 3rd. Thanks again for the advice and your smarts. Hooo-rah.
