OK so I have been using the search function but with no help at all except for making me more confused, so I figured I will just post something and go from there. So my current motor has about 175,000 miles on the clock and has develop really low compression in #2cylinder and some others marginal! So I think I have it ruled down to a bad valve but I am looking at rebuilding it. I would like to keep the build down in cost and quick as possible since this is my daily driver. So my questions are other than a rebuild/gasket kit what do I need or what needs to be accomplished, i.e. machine work. I know that if I keep the stock heads then I would need to head the heads redone. But what about the block. And is there anything else that I should do or have looked at.
If you just want to get the truck back on the road pull that head and swap on another one, nothing but gaskets and the replacement head needed. If you're going to do a full rebuild I suggest you source another motor and rebuild it and then once it's ready swap them out, the swap itself can be done in a weekend without much trouble. IMO there is no half-assing a rebuild, tear it own and take the parts to a reputable machine shop and have them do whatever it needs to return to stock spec, anything less is really just money wasted.
Yes I agree that there is no half-assing a build either. I was looking at doing just the heads for the time being, I have a motor possible a 347 in my parents garage but it will be months before I can get to it and figure whats all there. My brother was building if for his 95 truck but no longer has the truck. I do know that it is 30over has a new set of Keith Black pistons, and needs heads, oil pan and of course needs to be put together since everything is still in boxes. I am waiting to see what cast and part numbers my mom can find on it and then I will be coming here for answers im sure. So it sounds that replacing the heads will be my best bet for the time being. I can get the machine shop to do the heads for $150 plus parts if needed! And then a $50 gasket set.
Replace your cam chain when swaping the heads. You may not need to put the new motor in.
My oil pan gasket was also shot - it was cracked lenght wise, very surprised.
