Rebuild questions

i have 214,000 miles on my truck and im gettin ready to rebuild the motor this winter and i was wondering what needs to be replaced because it has so many miles? I would like to rering the pistons and recondition the connecting arms but they have alot of miles on them will they still be good or must i replace them im trying to keep myself on a decent budget on the rebuild and im not doing anything crazy just a cam, intake, gt40 heads, LTs.

I was also wondering about the lifters its a roller motor and i was wondering is it possible to reuse them or should i buy new ones. Im building a motor with low end torque and would like to keep the mpg as best as i can. it is my dd and it will see some towing and a little off roading nothing extreme.

With that kind of milage on the motor you need to do a full rebuild, strip the motor down and send everything off to a machine shop to be inspected, and then order what it needs to be build back to factory spec. There's no need for any upgraded parts besides a cam, the crank and rods can be reused but all other wear parts including the lifters, pistons and rings, and all bearings should be replaced... if you want a motor that could potentially go another 200k that is.

214,000 I'll bet it need bored and honed out. With that you will need new pistons, problem being that until they bore it out you have no idea how much will need to be board. the normal .030 should do fine but if there's heavy scoring .040 or even .050 might be needed to clean it up.

It's been a few years since I have done a full rebuild but most of the places can find you a full kit ( pistons, rings, bearing, cam, lifters, and gasket set ) for a good price.

I would send it out, have it all looked over, inspected and get a list of what needs to be replaced. From there see what kind of prices there talking, if it seams high ask for a couple days to work on getting money lined up or what ever and do some checking. DO NOT take to long to get back as if you wait too long your motor will get put on the back shelf and who knows when they will get back on it. a day or two if your lucky they will call on a Friday and it will give you the weekend to look / call around and get back to the shop on Monday.

Don't forget the little stuff, water pump, oil pump, clean and paint everything.

Like I said 30 over is the normal but if you have a heavy ridge, or heavy ware / out of round more might be needed. Honest same goes with the crank. Normal grind and polish is 10 but more might be needed.

As said connecting rods are normally reusable as long as they have not had a bearing spun in them. Just have to have new wrist pins pressed in. If you have the block hot tanked and cleaned, make sure you have new cam bearing as well. I have mine installed as I hate to install them and freeze plugs.
