Synthetic lubes Q?
I have two different transmissions in completely different trucks but the same question about the gear oil.
#1. DD 98 ranger 3.0 5spd 4x2 160,000 , was totalled and fixed bought it at 70k changed all fluids . Trans would grind a little when shifted fast either w/ATF (before i changed it) and now with mobil 1 synthetic 20w-50 motor oil.
#2. Hauler, 81 f250 4x4 sc , 300, t-19 bw, not sure of the miles as i bought it used and have put about 10k since swapping it in(was 351m,c-6). I used a synthetic gear oil , from a semi truck shop. Its hard to shift into 1st at a stop, sometimes i'll have to cut off the motor put it in gear then crank it up.
Now the question:
I have been told from some of my other manual transmission drag racers that the synthetics are too slippery to make the syncros grab the gear and match it with the slider.
Any thoughts or experiences?
If nothing else I may try ATF in the ranger and 80w-90 mineral in the t-19.
Thanks to all replies...................Ron
The ranger may have had a hard life before i got it. No telling how it was driven. Just wandered about the slipperiness of the synthetic over the ATF.
f250 i thought it maybe a bellhousing run out problem(didnt check it) but when the motor was in my 69f100 w/t-18 the t-18 shfted fine, same block and bell. May be clutch drag as i changed to a center force and it is a diaphram which has a slower ratio than the long style clutch that i had in the 69 w/t-18. Will look into my air gap with pedal pushed in.
