4x4 light on no awd or 4x4 4x4lo

i have a 1999 expedition eb that the 4x4 light stays on no matter what the selector is set at. the lights on the selector dont work there is power at the selector. i have taken disconnected the battery and got it to switch to 4x4 lo and it would not switch back to awd. had to repeat the process to get back to awd. have taken the gem out and no sings of water damage. i think it could be the selector but dont know i would apprecate the help thanks.

The contacts built into the shift motor signal the module to change the dash lights. Either disassemble the shift motor and clean the contacts or just replace it. Whichever works for you.

Those contacts being dirty would cause the light to stay on and none of the 4x4 drive to work even the a4wd? Thanks

Correct, because false signals would be sent to the 4WD module.
