4x4 dash light question

Ok, I have a minor issue. I know the basic problem, wondering if anyone else has had it and if a solution.

my 4x4 dash light will stay on even in 2wd.

I have a 1990 351W 4x4 auto XLT Lariet.

I have put a new switch in it and still same issue. basically the ball is not being pushed correctly by whatever pushes on it in the transfer case. Low light works fine, neutral works fine, 4hi works fine, but 2hi light usually stays on, If I really crank on switch with wrench light will function correctly for awhile but issue will return.

For me no big issue I just look at shifter and know if in or not, but wife/kids don't.

any ideas?

light is on because that is the easiest path to ground for electricity, make it harder, lite goes off, that's why the wrench works.

No I mean tighten it in more.... basically what ever pushes ball switch must be worn down just enough (20 year old truck)... just don't want to pull transfer case for such a minor issue, just wondering if any other options...
