So today I personally saw my first 5.4 3 valve that the cam phaser came apart on. Also broken timing chain and sheared off the end of cam where the phaser bolted. Truck had 168k and seemed kinda sludged up too so improper oiling may have had an effect as well. Dont know much more as a friend of mine was the one actually working on the truck but it does happen. Thought i would share that as i have always said "Oh just ignore the ticking and drive it anyway!"
Believe it or not, there are areas of the country that are not gridlocked every morning and afternoon. These same areas have rural roads that go for miles and speeds of 60+ MPH can be obtained. I know I can jump on one of these roads and go into different states! Not everyone deals with stop and go driving. FWIW..... I have 95000 miles on my 5.4. It doesn't tick, and there is no sludge. The oil gets changed at 4000 miles and Motorcraft semi syn is always used. I also suspect abuse on the damaged truck
