Thanks guys for the input. I'm pretty comfortable saying that if you present the truck to ford with a delete and tuner they are going to void the warranty and let you hire the lawyer to prove it didn't cause the problem. unless you get the dealer to cover you. Plus, i was raised by Roy Rogers so I would just eat whatever I broke anyway. As to the LOM (lie o meter) I would never count on that for fuel mileage. But MPG is not my primary concern. At the last oil analysis (after only 3400 miles) I had 6% fuel in the oil. That really sucks and that IS directly attributable to the DPF and regenerations. That's why I'm considering a tuner.
Do you mean take the truck to a Ford dealer with a tuner/delete that they will void your warranty? That is not true.
First, two different local Ford dealers change my oil regularly with no problem. They said, and I quote, "only time there would be an issue is if we are doing warranty work related to it", which makes sense.
I was a spartan owner and seen it first hand. You can live in your bubble and if you need to justify a tuner with fuel millage go ahead. I just don't want people to think that Spartan will give anyone a huge fuel increase because it does not. You need a custom economy tune for that. If you think increasing HP by 200 is going to save in MPG you are sadly mistaken...
I must live in that same bubble....
Of course the LOM is wrong....it was wrong before I tuned too. Thats where it gets its name from.....
I am running the +275 HP tune and...hand calculated...I am getting 12-15% better on average fuel economy than with my stock setup previously. That is a mixture of in town and highway driving.
Did I buy the Spartan based on better MPG?? NO, I bought it because it makes the truck run great and is way more fun to drive. The increased MPG is a nice bonus though.
So...maybe it is you that is "sadly mistaken"?? (seems like a lousy thing to say to all of us Spartan owners who have the numbers to prove it)
You know I've thought that and said it on here a number of times. And I've not heard anyone say they changed the truck back and got major repairs. However, there is a regular on here who did that and had a HPFP and some other pretty major stuff repaired. He is a Spartan guy. He didn't say he went back to stock to get the warranty work done but if anyone was paying close attention that's what he did. So, I'm wondering if what you say is true. logic tells me you're right but there are some very clever people working with computers so who knows.
I have no illusions that a Spartan tuner cannot be found by the good people at Ford. They WILL find it if they're looking hard enough.
Other simple tuner-related things are obvious too. There is a parameter in the 6.4L's computer that can tell you how many miles have been driven since the last reflash...if it says 100 or so and they know through OASIS that it's been 30,000 miles since it's last factory reflash, they just bagged you. Maybe not to the point of saying that you had a Spartan tuner installed, but they know the program was "tampered" with. You can even monitor that parameter with your DashDaq, try it out.
Tool marks on the exhaust clamps is another simple check. Maybe they can't say that you had a Spartan tuner by that alone either, but what person with a bone stock truck since day 1 has removed/replaced any exhaust components? (Unless they had a DPF replaced under warranty, which OASIS would show also).
I totally agree with you. If 2010F350 thinks his warranty is safe because he removed and sold the tuner, it's already too late if Ford is so motivated to find something was done.

Yes, I thought I covered that when I said "unless you get a dealer to cover you" but it's one thing to have the dealer cover you and quite another if they send a Ford tech out to determine if they should do a job costing several thousand dollars. A different level of motivation, dealers also sell trucks.

I am not surprised that the dealer could not find the codes. The issue comes into play when the Ford Tech arrives. There is a second layer that only Ford can grab from what I understand.
Also, I have had a ford denied warranty for a tuner in the past but the tuner definitely gives you additional MPG's. Anyone who believes otherwise should do more research on how a tuned diesel motor works. Obviously while keeping your foot off of the floormat helps too.
