Hello all,
I was told this and was wondering if it is true. I was going to but some bigger size tires. I have 265/70 r17, (stock).
I was going to buy 285/70 r 17 or 285/75 r 17.
I was told that when you install a bigger tire on these newer SD's that the computer will learn the tire size after a certin milage amount, and then adjust the speedo calibration.
Is this true. Or do I still need to go to the dealer and have them adjust via the computer.....
Thanks

No it will not learn but beware the dealer may very well not be able to adjust it either. Your best bet would be to buy a tuner and change it that way as long as have the benefits of a tuner.
All good info to know. Thank you all. So I will have to go to the dealer have them adjust it. The adjustment will not correct the speedo but will adjust the tran shifts.
Ok I will go to the dealer and have it done regardless. Wondering if there is only certain tires sizes that their computer will allow them to adjust for. Meaning 285/75r17 is really not a size offered by most tire companies. 285/70r17 is offered by most of them. So I am thinking that the dealer only has a few choices to adjust to for safety and liability stuff.

That is exactly what I discovered with our '05 the dealer had certain choices and the tires we had put on were not one of them so it was a waste of the $100, which they of course charged even though they did nothing. That is why I think it is better to put that money towards a programmer.

Thats what I was thinking. I have a friend who works at a lincoln mercury dealer. I will see if he can tell me what sizes they can adjust and go from there.
The service writer at first told me they could only adjust for 17-in. wheels since the truck originally was equipped with 17-in wheels; why, I don't know. So I used this tire website to determine an approximate 17-in wheel tire size. For the stock tire, I used the current tire on the truck; new tire was the equivalent 17-in wheel tire size. Gave them the equivalent tire size but nevertheless, they were able to calibrate it to gnats-a$$ speed when compared to the GPS. The website also gives the revolutions-per-mile info if the dealership needs that info as well.
