So the CEL is on but throws no codes?

Regardless at this point, after reading that doesn't sound like there is a thing wrong with the egr system?
I haven't checked the code that the CEL is giving. It only came on after the EGR was disconnected. There is definitely something wrong with the EGR. Truck had hesitation and didn't run well, EGR gets unplugged and it starts running pretty good. How does that not sound like an EGR problem?

Depending on the conditon, I don't necessarily consider 200,000 to be worn out. Mine is still running as good as ever with 282,000 miles on it.

Sorry, that should have read the egr "valve" not "system".

Truck had hesitation and didn't run well, EGR gets unplugged and it starts running pretty good.
What is done with the vac line while its disconnected, plugged or left open? when you say "it starts running pretty good" with it off does that include at idle? or only improves things at cruise speed?

I have done a lot of work myself but just didn't have the time to fiddle around with it. The truck had a hesitation, but he unplugged the vaccum tube from the EGR and it's running a lot better. No stalling, no hesitation. He also replaced a plug wire that was grounding out. It runs ok now, but the CEL is on which is really annoying. He did say that the motor is a bit worn and I'm probably looking at a rebuild sometime soon. The truck does have almost 200k miles on it. Heads and tranny have been rebuilt recently but I have no idea about the shortblock.

There is a junkyard near me that has a few 302's that I can have for $150. I can do the teardown and rebuild myself but have no idea what the machine shop is going to charge.

Would you put in a rebuilt 302 shortblock? Would you go to a 351? What years can I look at if all I'm doing is the shortblock? I use the truck as my daily driver and I don't have anything to tow. I'm happy with the current acceleration in the truck so I'm not looking for something to hot rod. Not that I don't like driving a fast vehicle but it's a truck. If I wanted something fast I wouldn't have bought it.

I was told a new EGR valve and sensor would run about $400 for parts and that I should stick with Ford because of problems seen with aftermarket EGR parts.

I don't really want to spend $400 on an EGR and rebuild the engine.

I want my CEL off... (I'm not going to put electrical tape over it...)

What would you do?

Scott
I do hope you get your problem fixed and I wanted to add a few comments, first and foremost your EGR valve and even the EGR tube will cost less than 120.00 if you buy it yourself. I hate when people get screwed by their mechanics, thats why i buy my stuff first even if a mechanic is doing the work when i dont have the specific tool or whatever. Also I dont understand this mechanic being one when this is 2010 and any shop that I have used in the pass 8 years use the better readers that once hooked up to the vehicle, it will read everything that it can, he may be using the generic style that autozone, advance auto and all others that offer a free scan. Again about your egr deal, I know we have different trucks but on my 98 expedition with the 4.6 my egr valve was 44 dollars and the egr tube was 52 which was an ordered itme, once they came it, it took me about 20 minutes to get the job done.
