I have a 2002 f-350. On my truck there are 2 small black boxes next to the brake fluid res. All my fuses are under the dash in the cab on my truck except for these small boxes. These boxes contain what looks like 2 relays in each of them. What are they for? I have a problem that my 4wd stopped working. I replaced the motor on the xcase checked the 30 amp maxi fuse , the 10 amp fuse also and still no power to 4wd case motor. no noise nothing, just dead in the water. I wonder if any of these relays control the xfer case power to the motor. If so can I switch any of the to test it out? At least then I know wht to fix. Also how does the switch on the dash get replaced if it is that (but i doubt it could be, its hardly ever used) I have an appt to take the truck to the STEALER on thursday as a last resort, this has me pretty stumped... thanks jeff
One set comes with trailer tow package and the other two may just be the High to Low and Low to High ESOF relays.
Relays in the same box are interchangeable, but not from box to box.
The ESOF relay contact arrangement is break-make.
The trailer tow relays are make only.
The ESOF relays would be like this.
The difference is contact 87a breaks (goes open) when relay operates.
The trailer tow relays will not have contact 87a.
Any relay with contact 87a can be swapped with an ESOF relay.
Once you determine which are the ESOF relays clean up the spade connectors and re-install to see if that helps.
If that doesn't help and you are semi-good with electrial you can bench test the relays using test leads to battery and ground to make sure relays operate and using a VOM check to make sure contacts when closed have continuity. Post 30 should have continuity to 87a when relay is non-operated and to 87 when relay is operated. To operate relay apply grd to 86 and battery to 85.
I just called the dealer to see if there is a module. He said it was 52.00. I wonder if this is the dash switch? parts guys said thats all that was listed and showed is was for the dash. It must be either a relay or the switch or maybe the module i have read about. thaks jeff
As of yet it is not fixed. I have appt to go to the dealer Thursday am to get it fixed. I plan on talking to the guy that works on it and find out exactly what and where the problem was/is. I will post Thursday pm hopefully. I believe it is relay or "module related" but it don't know for sure ... jeff
Should have checked the 4X4 switch, I pitty you for going to a STEALERSHIP. I took my truck in to get glow plugs changed, parts were 148 bucks for 8 plugs and the total bill was (drum roll) $836. Figures out around 100 bucks per plug. I will never go to STEALERSHIP again unless I really, really really have too.
Results are now in... after stealership diagnosis... it is the 4x4 module under the dash behind the glove box. I never did get any info here about that no matter how many notes I posted. And I was at the point of shooting in the dark for what it could be. If it was summer I would have figured it out without having to rush. But since it is the start of the snow season I had to have it fixed ASAP. 550 bucks is the total but I have a 100.00 coupon to use as well so it will be 450.. not to bad considering.... but now I know it can be only this.. the module behind the glovebox. ($200.00), the relays, the switch ot the xfer motor. I learned a lot on this one... thanks Jeff
Thanks for closing this loop for the rest of us. Hopefully, we will have another bit of information in the collective tool box of knowledge that will enable someone, someday, to get through his problem with minimal time and expense.
You paid your dues, and hopefully someday you'll get it re-paid to you here.
If that relay or what ever was two hundred dollars, labor seems way out of line even for the dealer. Thanks for the help. I can tell my boy now and see if he can locate it. Chet

I'm trying to fully understand the operation of the 4x4 activation on my 2001 SD. Is the 4x4 module being referenced here what other Threads are refering to as the GEM (generic electronic module)? Anyone know?
Edit: Upon further research, I understand that beginning in 2002, VSMs were used instead of the GEMs. Think I answered my own question. I failed to note that this thread was for a 2002 MY.
