If you remove the cap it will need to be replaced by another cap, or the top of the mirror will be exposed.
I priced replacement tow mirror caps at the dealer - I needed one for a wrecking yard one that I picked up for my paddle mirror upgrade.
The chrome mirror cap was silly expensive, like $150.0+ as I recall.
I tried to buy a black textured cap to match the mirror body, but for some strange reason it did not seem to be available at the dealer (?).
I ended up with a paint to match cap, and it was around $50.00. FYI, it was light gray, and not black. In the spring I will try to paint it to match the mirror body (textured matte black paint).
