My truck has the chrome package, which includes the mirror caps. It's a nice touch but I don't care for it much. An all black mirror would work much better for me (all black truck).
Here's the thing, I called my dealer and they told me I can't buy the black textured plastic cap (that would match the rest of the mirror). Only things available are the chrome cap ($73) and a smooth/paint to match cap ($70).
Anyone know where I could get the OEM black "textured" cap that would match the rest of my mirror?
I think this came up early on. If I remember correctly they are 2 compeletly different mirrors, the all black ones do not have a cap just a one piece mirror.
I would almost believe, under that crome cap would probably be the black textured finish. i can't imagine it to be a smooth finish. Its probably stuck on there with double sided tape, maybe gently pry it off.

This is correct... 2 different mirrors...
Skull caps (covers) are held on by 2 clips that engage slots in the back of the mirror housing. The clips can be released from behind the main mirror glass. Without the skull caps the mirror would be incomplete.

PowerStrokeHD posted "The mirror shell back is different for those with skull caps (chrome or painted) then the plain black ones with out.
The easiest/cheapest way would be to replace the chome skull caps with painted ones. "
That's why there is no part number for a textured cap. The back on the ones that are not painted or chrome are a single piece, somewhere I recall someone talking about how the caps pop off. There appear to be 2 different backs to these mirrors. I haven't tried to take mine off so I can't confirm this.
From looking at the parts diagram it appears that the black ones are a single back while the ones that have caps are not smooth under the cap, the cap appears to snap in place. The black mirrors are over $500 a piece while the ones with caps are over $800 a piece not including the caps. The prices for the skull caps match what you were told.
I bought chrome backs a couple trucks ago. Textured back pops off. Chrome pops off...
It doesn't exactly work that way on the 2011. If you have the Chrome mirrors the chrome part is a cap. If you have the regular textured mirror then it is one piece with no cap. They are not interchangeable. As stated previously you can buy a paint to match cap to replace the chrome but you cannot swap chrome caps onto a textured mirror and of course there is no textured cap to replace the chrome.
Don't take my word for it, a Ford (Detroit) employee already told us in this thread and several others.
Dealer told me the same thing Matt. I just thought I would double check here.
Just so I'm understanding, the chrome package isn't just a chrome cap it's a entirely different mirror that has a chrome cap?
That just seems more complicated then it needs to be. Guess I should have asked before I took the truck home from the dealer. If nothing else, I'll paint my chrome caps flat black to match and live with it.
