Acceptable Fuel Pressure Drop?

I have been wondering what is acceptable fuel pressure drop when accelerating? I have the BB modification and currently at idle run about 70 psi, but noticed that at times it will drop to 64 or 65 when accelerating. I know this is still high enough to protect the injectors, but what is a good pressure drop to be looking for when the filters are clogging? I am new to the 6.0 so learing all the warning signs is one of my first points to master.

thanks

That is about what mine is at. I figure that when it drops any lower would indicate fuel flow issues (filter) and then will change my filters.

Design your own curve. Take readings with new filters and record new readings every 5,000 mile. Take the last reading at 15,000 miles when you change filters. You now have a basis for most any fuel malfunction including the fuel pump. Any more than a 5 to 8 differential at any given constant may warrant investigation.

69cj,
Thanks I was planning to do that, but since this will be my first filter change since originally purchased and now with a FP gauge, I didnt have a scale to compare. I dont put on a lot of miles so the curve may take a bit to actually create. But I will for certain watch for any changes to the PSI beyond the 8 or so PSI.

My suggestion for 5 to 8 psi change was based on the fact that although the change is considerable you are still in the safe zone. On a personal note, I don't trust the bb mod. I would and did purchase the upgrade kit from Ford. That is an engineered part unlike the bb.

As long as it holds over 45psi at WOT it's fine. Any lower than that and your asking for trouble.

Tim, My impression is that the OP is looking for a trend to head off problems. I agree anything over 45 is safe.

Ford says so - However, I have heard others say that you can get by with it (and possibly even higher).

I personally won't risk it though.

45 is the min you want to see. now with that said I have gotten a few people ask about a sudden dump in pressure durring transmission shifting. this is very normal. what happens is as the engine defuels to make the shift fuel is shut down causing a rapid spike in pressure that triggers the regulator to go wide open and dump fuel.
As a tech If I saw more then 75 I would try a second gauge for testing then look for my issue thats causing it.

Woodlander, that is a huge drop. Now I dont know if its bad or not but thats huge. My normal is like yours and as hard as I try I cant get it below 58. Are you running a tune and if so what one.

Cheezit, I need to try a mechanical gauge. It might have to wait as I am hooking up the trailer and heading over the mountain for a week or so of snowmobiliing. I might try if I get a minute the next couple of days. What might be the problem causing it. I have a blue spring kit and changed all of the parts about 4000 miles ago. Fuel filters have 1000 on them. When I start it in the morning it runs at about 66 and then it inches up to 73-74 at idle after driving.

jetact please reread post 11 it expains why that dump happens.

yor drop/ climb may be from batteries being weak. alternator output. aftermarket filters come to mind as well.

Thank you cheezit. My batteries are 6 months old. I just put on (2 days ago) a DC power alt (it had this jump before I did it also). I have been using the same filters all the time. I get them at international. The box just says International service kit dual element.
