Hey everybody. I am a new member to the site. I don't know much about these old pick ups but I am looking at a 1968 Ford f-100 stepside. I haven't had a chance to get a hold of the owner yet. The ad simply reads "good truck, 6 cyl, runs good, clean inside". He is asking $850, but it has been advertised for a while, so I think i can get it cheaper. But I am looking for a 4wd and it's hard to tell in the picture if it is 4wd or not. When looking at this truck, are there any special things I should be looking for? I would mainly use this truck for hunting and driving during the winter.
Hi Paul, welcome to FTE.
That's a tough one really...is the photo crap?...does the picture allow you to see the front of the truck that
shows the axel? A 4x4 front axel would have a differential (big bulbous area). Other than that, the truck would
look like it sits higher too. If it's a picture from the side, you should see two drive shafts. Sorry to "dumb it down"
for ya, not sure if you're familiar with this stuff. Good luck.
Hi,
To add to what CropDusterMan said: when you go to look at the truck look for rust -- especially the front cab mounts, at the back of the cab (cab corners), at the front of the doors, at the rockers (below the doors), around the drip rail, rad support, inner fenders, inside lip of the hood, etc. Look at the frame for big scaling/rusting/holes.
Most rust can be fixed, and I don't know if you're looking for a project or not, but obviously less rust is better.
