I just experienced a auto transmission failure on my F250 SD , 4x4 crewcab, long bed, diesel. I had never noticed any slip of transmission and have been quiet careful to change fluid etc. I have 112,000 miles. Failure occurred at aprox 70 miles per hour on level terrain. Faiure first symptom was as if I had stuck a large bump in road. Almost immediately engine raced and no power. After stopping, I was able to move to a safe location and another loud "bump" occurred. At this time I lost ability to hold truck on slight slope in park and truck would not move. I have added a super chip about 30k miles ago and have not done any serious pulling with truck. Any similar experiences or thoughts on whether super chip was instrumental in failure? I now plan to replace transmission with new from dealer. Any recommendations?

sounds about right. My 99 trans dissinagrated at 75000 miles, always changed fluid an filter, never pulled over 5000 lbs. I believe these autos can't handle the torque delivered from the ps. My next one will be a manual.
After 10 days in dealer's garage and awaiting shipment of replacement trans, they discovered failure to be transfer gear failure. Now, I have asked for original transmission replaced into my truck and just fix transfer case. Incidentally, my son had a transfer case failure at 5k miles. Now, any experience with transfer case failures??
Yes. A partner of mine at work had TWO transfer case failures on a 1999 F-250 SD V10. One at 750 miles and the second at 1200 miles! He lemon-lawed the truck.
Since my transfer case failurre occurred at 112,000 miles, I suspect that I will have a bit of difficulty in prosecuting any type claim. Does anyone know about any accesible data base that might show incidence of transfer case failure for these trucks?
My 4R100 in my 2001 went out at 57k. I got a Jasper rebuilt trann for $2300 and it has a 75,000 mile / 36 month warranty. You have to replace the tranny cooler also since it can't be flush properly.
I recently had my transfer case fail on my 1999 F-250 Powerstroke 4WD. The truck only has 59K on it and I never tow any heavy loads and is for private use only. The unit failed coasting down a hill. When I got to the bottom the case went into nuetral and that was it... Dealer says transfer case went .... $2000 to replace it... they think the input shaft went bad...
I cannot believe my unit failed for no apparent reason especially when I see contractors pulling large trailers daily with dullies and use the same case and never have a problem for hundreds of thousands of miles... I beleive this is a factory defect in my unit.
Does anyone know of any recalls? I contacted Ford customer support who said they will do nothing... not even chip in for the labor...
Interestingly enough, my son had a F250 4x4, 1999, auto, diesel that had a transfer case failure at about 5000 miles. My failure occurred at about 100,000 under no load conditions. My truack has had very limited towing of a 5-6000 pound horse trailer. My son's failed under no load conditions. I stongly suspect a design deficiency in the transfer case for these trucks. Incidentally, mine failed with a superchip installed. My son's failed with stock computer. My dealer claimed that my failure was due to super chip installation.
While I love the performance of my truck, I have been plagued with front wheel brakes starting to chatter every 20-30,000 miles, a failure of the flywheel, and the transfer case failure.
Does anyone have suggestions for after market brake kits? Is there a forum comparing Duramax, Dodge and Ford diesels?

I have also had allot of problems with front brake rotors warping. I had to have them turned at 30K... Brakes Plus here in Denver say that the Ford trucks have this common problem... As you may know denver is flat .. don't use brakes much out here..allot of highway miles.... wonder how the people do in hilly areas of the country...
FYI... Ford replaced my case with a new unit.. I checked and they told me this is the same case used in up to 2003 model... they changed the case in 2003 with the new 6 liter PS.
Ford may have relized a problem with the 99 cases.. not enough to do a recall... but maybe enough to do a design change inside the unit to beef it up... my new unit would be one of these later units... FYI... I was told that Ford does not make the transfer case...
You ask the important question - "Is there a design weakness/quality problem in the 99 transmissions?". Clearly, I do not know. It was my good fortune that after the dealer removed and replaced my transmission, he discovered that it was the transfer case that failed - duh! Since I started this string - before the discovery of the transfer case problem - I have heard of others with transfer case problems.
Good luck to us all! I must confess that this transfer case problem, the propensity for the brake rotors to warp, and my loss of a flywheel has dimmed my enthusiasm for my Power stroke.

Bob, the '99s are prone to having the rotors warp. I just had mine resurfaced (40K miles). I have been told that I was lucky to get that many miles. I am expecting to do it again in 20K or so. A lot of guys have upgraded to Art rotors (I think that is right). Hopefully someone with better knowledge will chime in with the correct name if I am wrong. I believe this style of rotor is supposed to be awsome but a little pricey. Try this link: http://www.appliedrotortechnology.com
I just ordered a set of gauges to keep a closer eye on my truck to include a transmission temp gauge. I hope that by doing this I can extend the lift of my truck by not running it passed its performance specs.
Keep in mind that this forum primarlily discusses the issues that folks are having with their trucks and not the positive aspects of the trucks. I really believe that they are great trucks. I have two friends with chebys and they have problems too.
