Do you thing it will be alright being welded? It will have to be squeezed then welded. it took me 6 monthes to find this one having a hard time finding transmission the fit my truck.
It depends upon how much penetration that you can get. I personally would squeeze it together and then weld it inside and outside. I personally would do several passes like a structural weld. Grind those suckers down and it will be good to go. Why in the world, or how did that get cracked?
it got cracked by a round bale falling on it. the guy i bought it from lives on a farm and it was in the same shed as the hay.
as much as i would like to do a zf swap i cant find any transmission of any kind i my area
I would pry just weld it. Your only out 30 minutes of your time, and some welding wire and grinding disks. I would pry just buy a zf from ebay and have it shipped, craigslist works good too.
cant wait to drive this truck, I drove it 3 or 4 time then the other tranny went on me so I guess ill start with what i got. I paid 200 for the tranny and and bellhousing
It appears to be a plain old big block bellhousing, they shouldn't be too hard to find.
If you plan on repairing it, just make one spot weld before welding the whole thing up, you want to make sure it's squeezed together tight enough so it will actually bolt to the engine.
I was told that a diesel bellhousing was different, but i dont know?
It should be the same. I have only seen two different bellhousings, the big block diesel bellhousing in my dad's crewcab and the smallblock bellhousing on my 302. (On our C6 transmissions, I don't know specifics about yours)
Sorry about that, I did some reading and found this out:
They are definately different. They look very similar, but the differences are just enough to make it not work, specifically dowel pin location, and bolt sizes.
no guys it don't work I tried to match up a 1985 6.9 diesel clutch houseing to a 429 it looks real close but it does NOT work!
I guess my eyes can't tell "looking the same" and "being the same" appart.
As far as the weld, I perhaps would try grinding it out so that you have a smooth finish to weld, maybe not though. I would get it good and tight, tack it outside and inside and then weld a pass, grind, weld again and finally grind it. I would be willing to bet that with that procedure, and any ability at all you will find that the rest of the trans will break before your weld breaks. Its a trait of a good welder if you can break the metal around a weld before your weld breaks.
Actually, the bb bell housing is kinda hard to come by. I never see em in the jy, and there is one guy in my area trying to get $250 for his and it is repeatedly on cl for the last year or so.
