We have been looking at these for awhile now..Have read a few articles in search but most are 4 years ago.. Not much info avaliable..
So is anybody using one, or one similar like BD. brake, or even know someone who is using one on the 6.0 engine?
Any information would be welcomed. Such as how long using, type of hills used on,any other mods needed?
Ya know I have used the turbo brake with the SCT and it works fairly well. There have been times tho that I wanted it off while still being in tow/haul as it was slowing me too much. The only way for me to get rid of it was to turn tow/haul off. Really at the end of the day not that big of a deal but with an true exhaust brake I can turn it on or off at will. Again something I would like to do but far in the future I think.
I added a Banks Speed Brake in conjunction with the Banks IQ this last summer. I had concerns to how it would affect my motor and transmission. So far I like the performance of the unit. I towed my trailer from Denver to Dillon, Colorado (over 11000 ft) to check out the effectiveness of the unit. It passed with flying colors on holding my speed at 60 MPH going west on I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel down to Dillon. It again performed very well returning to Denver. I was towing 14,500 lbs (scale checked) for this test. The transmissions shifts are smooth, but firm. I have used this on other mountain roads (over10,000 ft) also, that did not have a long straight decent, and found it to keep me at the speeds that I punched in. Albeit not as smooth as I would have liked, but better than the TOW|HAUL button that I used to use. The tranny temps stayed within what I would expect during these tows. That’s my 2 cents on this post.

Airzima can you adjust the speed brake on the go to give you more braking if you need it? And do you run stock head bolts or did you install studs?

If I understand correctly the tow tunes are not adjustable on the go.But can you adjust it at all ? Does it get stronger as the brake is applied harder? and is it only activated with the tow haul mode.?
Thanks for taking the time to answer guys. My rig and 5th wheel scaled at 22,200 lbs, the truck can handle it but on the steep grades in Montana I have to pull it down in gears where the the tow haul can hold it,which equates to 22-30 mph on the steeper grades, signs said 6% but I think it was steeper. I would like to do a little better to stay up with the group, sorry I hate to have a Dodge pass me on the down hill after I left him behind on the uphill..
Flamebuster, you are correct the tunes are not adjustable on the fly. I do not feel any difference in the turbo brake if I apply the brakes any harder and with my application, the turbo brake is only operating when in tow/haul mode.
I'm far from an expert in this field...but more of what I've picked up over the years "grinding gears" in Class 8 trucks.

Which is pretty much what a Jake Brake does...it changes the valve timing to cause a resistance in the engine somewhat close to what it would produce if it was pulling a load. Or at least that's what we were told in the late '90s before all the EPA crap came along and screwed up a bunch of great engines (C12, C15, C16...all non-ACCERT). I know the turbo would still spoil up and produce "boost" just by looking at the boost gauge in the dash. Going off the top of my head...about 50% of normal pulling boost.

That is bad, at least you'll have brakes at the bottom of the hill. He might have a wrecked truck.
I have not used an exhaust brake and my truck and 5th wheel weighed in at 21760 on the cat scale. The 2003 tow/haul programming is very agressive and will chirp the rear tires on a downshift in the right conditions. I do know that my brother in law had his turbo replaced from excessive coking shortly after installing a BD exhaust brake. He removed the exhaust brake to have the turbo warrantied.
