? on ebp sensor

last night truck started bucking, jerking, and pouring smoke out the pipe while under acceleration.once moving it cleared itself out until i had to stop again then same thing....limped the truck home and did alot of reading here and tried a few things. came to the ebp sensor ...unplugged it and truck seems to run better now.? is...could it be a bad sensor?harness? or should i be looking for something additional? no codes popped up on the scantron.truck is an 05 w/ 114,000 in the past couple months i've replaced the hpop, icp, ipr, and ficm....
thaks for any input, still new to diesels and diagnosing them w/all this electronic crap on them

Could be a couple of things. If you unplugged the EBP sensor and didn't get a code it sounds like your scanner isn't reading everything it should. It could be turbo vanes sticking, EGR valve, EBP sensor or plugged EBP sensor tube.

let me rephrase that...checked for codes before i started unplugging sensors. unplugged egr sensor 1st and no difference in condition, only when ebp sensor unplugged did it seem to clear up.weird thing it has acted like that a couple times over the last month or so then goes away.was getting late, cold and tired. figured i'd check more into it today.

So you should have EGR and EBP codes now and you should double check to make sure. It never hurts to pull and clean the EGR valve and EBP tube for a start. Also, did you notice your boost gauge while this was happening?

Oh....something else to check would be the MAP sensor hose from the intake manifold to the sensor for cracks/loose, and the fitting in the manifold to make sure it's "tight".

LOL--one more thing. How warm was your truck when this happened? Had you been driving it for a while or was it still relatively "cold", i.e. not to full operating temperature.

supposedly when i had the truck in to dealer to replace ficm they said they cleaned the egr valve, said was pretty dirty. unfortunately i did not pay attention to the boost gauge under that condition...was more worried about getting it out of traffic's way lol.
the truck was up to full temp, between driving and idling was running for about 45 min before started acting up. thanks for the advice/help it's greatly appreciated since i'm still diesel technologically challenged :-) will re check for codes and your other suggestions once i get some go juice in me...will let ya know what i find. thanks again!

OK--I'm really leaning towards dirty/sticking turbo vanes here. A good "blowing out" might be in order after checking the things I listed. An EGR can get pretty nasty pretty quick, so .......

ok here's the data i collected....
cal i.d. - vxcf9n.4
ebp sensor unplugged...running at idle.
baro - 98
maf flow- 37-40
map- 99
egr com- 0%
idle spd 690
coolant temp- 145 after 10 min running @ idle
volts running - 13.9 koeo dropped to 11.7

no codes came up regardless of ebp plugged in or not
didn't pull the egr had to come in and warm up freaking cold out this morning.
one thing i forgot to mention...when i replaced the air filter element i used the stock filter box,cut out the old element and replaced w/ an airraid drop in filter. would that have anything to do with it acting up? after alot of thought i never exp. this condition till i did that? any thoughts on that one? wonder i should replace with stock filter again?

Plug the EBP sensor in and see what the map, baro, and ebp read key on engine off. They should all read virtually the same. Something is screwy if you're not reading a code with the EBP unplugged. It should throw a code.

Take it by the parts store and have it scanned for codes just for grins and giggles.

any thoughts on my other post about air filter element? also forgot to mention and don't know if it's relevant or not...changed the exhaust to a 4" turbo back earlier this year, retained the cat. before i reassembled exhaust i did notice that the cat was really sootie. any chance of it being or on it's way to being plugged up?

It can happen, but from what I have seen, it is RARE.

ok well i ran around all afternoon.....ebp sensor plugged in when i left started acting the same as last night stopped unplugged ebp sensor cleared up and ran pretty good. jumped on e-way and put the pedal down, didn't hesitate or fall on it's face. boost pressure ran up to about 22-25 psi. oh also stopped at autozone to have them check with one of there scanners...no cel or codes popped up.so should i assume it's just the sensor?

I just hate to see you shell out the coin for a new EPB sensor when it may or may not fix your problem. It's not a cheap sensor although I don't recall the price. Somewhere between $100 and $300 though. I'm just confused about unplugging it and not getting a code, especially on an 05.

well took a chance and bought the sensor. pulled tube cleaned it out. pulled intake and looked at compressor wheel. looked pretty clean, spun compressor wheel w/finger and spun freely.put back together...started up quicker than ever has since i owned it. let it warm up took for a ride to get up to temp....ran great for 30 min. then started acting up again, pulled sensor plug runs fine...wtf!? oh well lesson learned. guess i'm gonna have to ask santa for the auto enginuity program for christmas...or a new truck....anyone have any other suggestions? not buying any more parts till i no for sure...oh partsman got the sensor for 80+ tax. which is bad enough.
