I hear a thump in the Driver's side front wheel of my F250 4x4, 125K miles. The thump occurs right before a the truck completely stops, not during the entire braking process.
I looked at the front end for visable worn out parts, and I did not see anything.
look at your tires, look for any unusual wear patterns (like scalloping) across the treads, when the shocks wear out it allows the tire to hop off the pavement and wear unevenly, and if your ball joints are bad the tire will wear worse on one side, (like the inside)
My truck acted like yours and it turned out to be my tires had worn very uneven due to needing shocks and ball joints,

Any Ideas?
I think I have the same issue. It happens to me after I've come to a complete stop. Just a low thump. I just recently had my ball joints replaced and I asked the guy who did the job to inspect the entire front end and he let me know that everything was ok except of course for the ball joints. I'm hoping it isn't a transmission issue.? Sorry I can't be of more help.
If it is the ball joints, how hard are they to change??
THANK YOU ALL FOR THE QUICK REPLIES
If you run a search through this site you can find the instructions on how to replace the ball joints and make a better decision on how hard it would be to replace them yourself. I mentioned I just had my replaced and when I was looking, it looked pretty intense. But then again, I'm not that mechanically inclined. The dealership quoted between 1200-1500. I took it to a shop that specialized in suspension, brakes, etc. and they honored a price of 605. I also had my tires rotated and balanced and it totaled about 650. Hope that helps.
