I have been searching the world over for a radiator core support for a 65 F100 4X4. Mine has turned to dust. Its the last part I need to get "Ole Blue" back on the road again after 20 years sittin in the ole mans pasture. She's takin shape but I need some help. Anybody got one or knows who does? New seems to be impossible and used has been tough. When I do find one at the recyclers, no one seems to know if the 4X2 and 4X4 supports interchange. From what I have gathered I may need to look into the 1964 model to get a match. Any imput would be greatly appreciated.
I am repairing the frontend crash damage to my '65 100 with parts from a '66 donor (no drive train) which I recently purchased. It has a good front clip, but unfortunately a rusted out core support. I now have two rusted out ones, so I too need a good core support, but $349 is out of my parts budget. By the way, when I picked up the truck, it turns out to be a custom cab with power steering! I thought about just putting a drive train in it, but I don't like 3/4 ton long beds.
Here is my RCS question. Is the '66 core support different? When I try to locate one this spring (IF it ever comes) do I have to have one from a '66?
My truck does have the step inside the door, and I think I have what you call the rounded inner fenders (I'm not sure what to compare it to).So far, I have found a few differences in the 4X2 to the 4X4. The cab mount is acually just a cab floor support and floor pan. The box is a style of its own and I found out the hard way that the fender openings are bigger on the 4 wheel drive than on the 2 wheel drive. I ordered patch panels for both fenders and found that they required some cutting and shaping which I am in the process of doing. I have found some used core supports at some recyclers online but am a little gunshy as to which year to order and yes, the ebay part looks sweet but is way over my parts budget. I really appreciate all the help.
The 65 and 66 core supports differ in the the angle of the the inner fenders. The inner fender support angle has a slightly different shape and the 66 does not have the lower lug on it. They will interchange though. All that has to be done is to drill another hole in the inner fender or tha mounting angle to get the one hole that does not match to fit. If you have a 66 4x4 than you want the later no lug style to accomodate the steering box. It is my guess that the angle was changed slightly to allow the vent on the steering box on the f100 4x4 to fit inside the engine compartment. The earlier model will fit also but the vent on the steering box will be in the fender well.
I have found all this out by experience. I am restoring a 66 f100 4x4 and had a 65 core support and inner fenders powder coated. I did not want the vent be in the inner fenders so I had to find the core support without the lower lug. It is pretty hard to find as quite a few of the 66 trucks have the earlier style core support. I took a 65 core and cut the inner fender bracket spot welds and reinstalled the brakets from my old core support than cut the lugs off. You can't tell the difference.
