I want to take the chrome plate off my wheels so they look like the black spare that i have.
The chrome appers to only be a plate or like a skin that is somehow attached to the wheel.
Does anybody have experience in removing this?
I whould like to keep the chrome piece intact so if i want to, i can put it back.
Chrome is put on by electro plating, you remove with a abrasive wheel, not advised due to heating, or in an acid bath you etch and paint over. It can't be removed intact and replaced, its likely about 0.003 - 0.004 inches thick on a steel rim. You are better off buying a set of black painted rims, but keep in mind they will chip and rust and thats why chrome is used.

Completely understand what you are saying. But on my rim and i am assuming on the OP's rims. We have what appears to be chrome plate cover over the stock rim. They came this way from the factory.
was wondering if these (chrome plates) can be removed easily.
My 96 had rims close to those. They are Stainless Steel covers crimped and glued to a steel rim. One of mine rusted out almost completly but the SS held it on untill i could pull over! Now i've got my f350 with alloys
I have the same rim-with-cover in the picture in the first post. I believe I have traced a rattle back to something (stone, bolt, or ?) between the rim and cover. There seems to be just enough room for something to get in there.
So is there any way to get the chrome covers off?
Thanks for any replys! This is really beginning to drive me nuts...
