Question What do you think of AAMCO quality?

I'm going to upgrade my gears and after attempting to change them myself I have decided to take it to a pro. The Ford dealer wants about $800 and AAMCO wants $600. Does AAMCO do good work? Whould you let them put new gears in your truck?

Thanks.

I've been to them once and swore I'd never go back. They pulled the pan on my tranny & when they put it back on they didn't replace the gasket......surprise, surprise, it leaked! They ended up replacing the gasket, but they were far less than willing to do it. No common sense at all.

I've talked to other people that have gone to them and haven't found a satisfied customer yet.

If there's a Cottman near you, give them a try.

I've heard good and bad things about Aamco. If you can find a good local shop in your area, that would probably be your best bet. I have had good luck with the independant guys. Especially the ones who have been in business for alot of years. You don't stay in business too long if you do cruddy work.

Edit: I don't know where you live, but if you check your local Chapter section on this site, you might get a good shop recommendation from some of the chapter members. Just a thought.

I know a lot of people are going to rip on AAMCO. I owned an AAMCO Center for several years so I _know_ the facts. The facts are there are more good AAMCO centers than bad. And I would trust an AAMCO Center before an independant.

There are over 700 AAMCO dealers nationwide so you are going to find some bad apples. Most AAMCO Center owners are good decent business men that want to do a good job. The problem is it is very difficult to find good transmission techs. There is a terrible shortage of good techs in the repair industry as a whole but its waaay worse in the transmission business. The reason I got out was I couldn't find good techs and I got frustrated at problems and complaints from customers that I was trying my best to treat fairly.

The other issue is most customers are their own worst enemy when it comes to dealing with a transmission shop. They set themselves up to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous independents because they shop rebuild prices _first_. The other issue is many AAMCO's won't make minor repairs anymore because so many customers sued for a new transmission when their transmission failed long after a minor repair was made to fix a simple problem. To protect themselves the AAMCO owners prescribe rebuilds for almost any problem or else they will get sued.

I too owned an AAMCO franchise and lots tens of thousands of dollars due to unscrupulous tactics by some operators in the Eastern States.
Does Bloominton mean anything?
What did head office do?

Don't try to convince me about AAMCO.

In fact AAMCO did not like me as an owner.

Why?

Because I was a rebuilder first.

This will probably be edited and I will be given a tongue lashing or told to leave.
My point still stands.

That was another reason i got out. I was being raped on intershops (warranty work done by other AAMCO centers).

The home office is useless. They only care about getting their cut. Everything else can go to he__.
