Have not had the problem myself, but from what I have heard there is a wire that breaks and can be repaired by taking the seat cover off. This is the most common thing it seems.
If the light comes on the problem can most likely be fixed for just your time . I had this problem on my 99 expy . Just pull the seat out then pull the cover off ( the bottom one is the one that usually fails). Once you get cover off you will see a burnt spot or maybe 2 where the wires are to short in the heating element in the back. I just added a little more length so it wont happen again. The element wires are very thin but workable . I soldered mine . You will need hog ring pliers and 8 to 10 hog rings . Once you get the cover off this will all be obvious . Good luck if you try this it took me about a hour and a half.

Quick question for you, Do you have side air bag on seat? If yes, did you simply disconnect and reconnect the SRS connecter under the seat or did something special?
Mine did not have side air bags . Be sure to follow safety guide lines about disconnecting battery before working on those air bags. Also I saw Rock Auto has replacement heater pads .

I asked a similar question some months ago and was told that there is no problem with just removing them. I only wanted to do a major carpet cleaning in mine but that's going to wait 'til spring now.

I was thinking the same thing. Once battery got disconnected. stored energy in SRS will be depleted shortly......so no power..no problem...
I will repairing the leather cover and check on heat seat at the same time..
